More and more people are looking to network marketing to fund their retirement, go on more vacations a year, or retire faster! In general, this is an industry that is on the rise.
While the network marketing industry is growing, the many options for products and services are exploding! I can think of several, right off the bat, like Pampered Chef, Isagenix, Rodan+Fields, HerbaLife, Nerium, and the list goes on and on.
After being in network marketing for a while, I am more and more aware of both good and bad MLM companies. Our big question today is how to discern the best opportunities.
What is a MLM?
For those of you that don’t know, MLM stands for Multi-Level Marketing.
In the old days, you may have heard of “pyramid schemes.” While there are similarities, a MLM is not a pyramid scheme. These schemes are now illegal and there are laws in place to keep businesses honest and to protect the consumer.
Today, those people who have chosen to be self-employed and work from home are creating wealth in a non-traditional way (no more time clocks, no more bosses, no more quotas, etc.). Multilevel level marketing has emerged for those wanting more out of life or control of their life, and many are now the CEO of their very own business. Doesn’t that sound good? It did to me!
The Good the Bad and the Ugly MLM
We’ve all heard of those companies that tarnish the industry for the rest of us. Whether the claims are founded or not, it’s hard to escape the harm of bad press, and companies such as Advocare and Nerium are still regrouping after taking the hit. It’s like a bad comment you can’t really take back or “un-say.” I don’t know how many times I have heard friends, family, and even strangers say to me, “Oh, you’re one of those.”
I’m saddened by the lack of vision people have. There is a definite trend toward the internet and away from traditional stores. While I lament that, I am seeing the trend and want to be part of it. Ride the wave so to speak.
What is the best MLM?
I’m sure different people would offer different responses to “What’s the best MLM?” We are all looking for that perfect product or service, something we can totally get behind. That is one of the keys – find something that you’re passionate about, and then sell it like crazy. Sell the products, and sell the opportunity to others to sell the products so that more people can receive the positive benefit of your product.
So to answer this question, I would encourage you to do think about what makes you happy, or think about a target audience that you want to help. For example, maybe you are passionate about staying fit. Find a product that helps people achieve that goal.
Todd and Leah Rae Getts, two talented and successful internet marketers, provide a great resource to use in choosing the best MLM to work with. They lay out 12 clear criteria. You can get a FREE copy of the “Opportunity Checklist for Home Business Entrepreneurs” here.
Point #2, for example, stresses the importance of finding product you believe in. Ask yourself, “would I buy this even if there wasn’t any compensation associated with it?” If you wouldn’t buy it, use it, and love it, then how are you ever going to tell others to do the same?
Other Factors To Consider
When choosing your business, you might want to be clear on the following:
- How long has the company been around?
- What does the competition look like? (best case scenario – there are no competitors)
- Is it a global company?
Knowing the company, the history, etc. will help you with the trust factor. If you trust the company, you can sell your products without reservation.
The last item here, being a global company really speaks to me, especially because I am an American living outside the U.S. Since most of my contacts live in the United States, I want to be able to sell there. And, since we live in Mexico, I want a product I can also sell to my neighbors here. I have found that there are many desirable MLM opportunities that do not market in Mexico, much less on a global scale. So, for us, this idea of a global platform is an important point on the Opportunity Checklist.
If you are ready to retire, or want to help build your retirement nest-egg, I would suggest seriously taking a look at an MLM opportunity. I can almost guarantee you that you will find something that fits for you, and you can begin making money to run toward your dreams. While we are super excited to be retired from our first occupations, we are also exhilarated by the new learning and growing we are experiencing as internet marketers.
